Descendants of Wm. Alexander McClintock (McClintic)

Generation No. 1

1. William Alexander1 McClintock was born 1717 in Tyrone County, Ireland, and died December 1801 in Warm Springs, Virginia. He married Nancy Shanklin Abt. 1748 in Tyrone County, Ireland.

During the reign of King James I (1603-1625) of England, many Scott immigrants settled in Northern part of Ireland, known as Ulster. William Alexander McClintock was descended from the ancient Scottish family which was established in Northern Ireland when his ancestor Alexander McClintock emigrated from Argyleshire, Scotland about 1597 and settled on the estate of the Duke of Lennox, Ludovic Stewart who owned land in Northern Ireland and in Argyleshire, Scotland. Alexander II acquired title to the Rathdonnel Estate of 10,000 acres near Trinta County Donegal, Northern Ireland, which contained 4,000 acres of arable land, about 1650. This estate was devised at his death to his eldest son John. The main residence was Rothenstal Castle.

William Alexander McClintock and his wife Nancy Shanklin McClintock came to America in 1763, according to the Revolutionary War record of their son, Joseph. The family lived in what was then Lancaster County Pennsylvania until 1773. All of the children except F. Alexander McClintock were born in Ireland. In 1773 the family moved south to Virginia. In 1774 William purchased land on the east bank of the Jackson River in Botetourt County, Virginia (which became Bath County in 1779)

By 1774, the first of the families that would dominate the 19th century Jackson River Valley community had obtained land in the area. The family head was William McClintic I (1717-1801), an immigrant from Ireland. He started the family landholdings with 175 acres which he purchased from Andrew Borland for 154 pounds in Virginia currency on 8 February 1774 (McClintic Papers). Borland was the son-in-law of William Jackson who was the recipient of one of the two royal grants in 1750.

Although William McClintic I and his family prospered in their new location in Virginia, they knew adversity as well. William McClintic II (1759-1786) had joined the army during the American Revolution and fought under General Nathaniel Greene at the Battle of Guilford courthouse in1781. He was wounded there, and died of complication from his wounds five years later. It was his son, William McClintic III, who became very influential and acquired much property in the Jackson River Valley.

In 1801, William McClintic I left farms to his son Alexander and to his grandson, William III, both of whom were already building estates of their own. Within four decades, McClintic holdings were so extensive the members of the extended family paid taxes on the following property: William McClintic III, nine slaves and 2220.5 acres of land; his brother, Moses McClintic, seven slaves and 2102.5 acres of land; their mother, Alice Mann McClintic Cavendish, nine slaves and 1120 acres of land; and Alexander McClintic, son of William McClintic I, eight slaves and 525.5 acres of land. Notes for Alice Mann:
Soon after his (William's) death, the County Court of Betetourt Co. recommended that his widow should be paid a pension by the U.S. Government. Whether she received any monthly payments or not, is unknown, but between 1795 and 1800, she was given a lump sum of money. With this money along with some her father-in-law gave her, she bought the homestead of Robert McClintic (her husband's brother). To this in later years adjoining property was added which amounted altogether to 450 acres of land. In 1808, she married again to William Hunter Cavendish, a Lawyer of Greenbrier Co.(Cavendish, an Englishman, settled in Greenbrier in 1769. He was the first County Clerk of said Co. and served in the State Legislature 1790 -1800. When Bath Co. was organized in 1790 he was one of the first lawyers given a permit to practice at Warm Springs. By a previous marriage he had several children living in Greenbrier Co. When he died in 1818, according to his will, specified that he had no strings attached to his wife's property but property he owned in Greenbrier Co. he gave to his own children. Probably he was a shrewd man, for both of his stepsons used part of his name in naming their own children. After his death, this farm was always known as the "Old Cavendish" Place and his widow was called Grandma Cavendish. Grandma Cavendish was a good business woman. With the aid of her two sons, she accumulated considerable land on both sides of Jackson's River in the southern part of what is now known as Bath Co. After she became a widow again, her grandaughter, Bettie McClintic came and lived with her. She made and recorded her will in 1838, 20 years before her death. Unfortunately, her son Moses, died before she did. In her will she gave both her sons and all her grandchildren property and named her son William III executor. After her death in 1858, some of the in-laws of her son Mose's children brought suit against the estate for a new accounting but failed to change any part of it. (See her will, Bath Co. W.B. #6, p. 176 and supplement of lawsuit) She lived to be 95 years of age. Mabel Griffith Martin NSDAR #250422 has Alice b. Nov. 1762 and d. Feb. 1853. Hunter Arbuckle has gravestone inscriptions from the McClintic graveyard on a part of the old Bath Co. Homestead. Alice McClintic Cavendish d. Feb. 11, 1858 age 95 yrs.

Notes for F. Alexander McClintic:
Alexander McClintic (1765-1848) was a leader in Bath County. His name is the first on the roll of the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church. He was also the first elder after its organization on September 23, 1823, and he continued to serve until his death in 1848.
The same Alexander McClintic was one of the justices appointed by the governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1807 to conduct the County Court. He served until 1833. Soon after that, his son, Alexander Hamilton McClintic, succeeded him on the County Court, which had charge of the county finances and the county business in general.
